This house at 306 20th Street in Kanawha City is one of 12 East End homes that were relocated across the Kanawha River in 1923. The homes had originally been purchased by the state to make room for the new state capitol. However, before the buildings were demolished, a realty company bought and moved them to a new subdivision across the river. The remarkable relocation process involved raising each house on jacks, lowering it onto timbers resting on rollers, and then moving it to barges using a horse-powered windlass. Once the houses arrived on the opposite shore, the process was reversed. Today, three of the relocated homes still stand on 20th Street, including this one.
