This distinctive house on Porter Road in Kanawha City was designed by architect Henry Elden and constructed in 1968. The home was uniquely designed to accommodate Elden’s studio on the first floor, with living space above. Top-O-Rock won numerous architectural awards and gained attention through magazine features and a television show. Elden, who designed more than 800 buildings throughout West Virginia during his career, died in 2009. In 2011, the house was sold but unfortunately sat empty for several years. Vandals caused extensive damage to the property in 2014, and despite efforts to save it, Top-O-Rock was ultimately demolished in September 2015.
