This house at 1636 Kanawha Boulevard was built around 1890 for wholesale grocer Meredith Ruffner. Ruffner, along with A. L. Ruffner and others, owned and operated the Ruffner Hotel, the largest building in Charleston at the time except for the Capitol building. The house is notable for its frame construction and features overlapping shingles in various shapes.
