A Logan County native, she overcame the loss of her husband in the mines to raise her family through hard work. Best known for her mastery of the clawhammer banjo, she greatly influenced traditional music. With a sharp sense of humor and a philosophy of "don't take more on your head than you can kick off your heels," she believed music and dancing could chase away life's troubles.

Her legacy endures through her recordings, the 1984 Vandalia Award, and a 2023 marker dedicated to her in Chief Logan State Park, honoring her contributions to old-time music.
