In 1933, Beulah McCown became one of the first female pilots in West Virginia to earn a flying license, later obtaining a commercial license. She married her instructor, Hubert Stark, in 1939. In the late 1930s, she performed air shows and co-founded the West Virginia chapter of The Ninety-Nines. She also started Mountain State Air Service with her brother and husband. During WWII, she joined the Civil Air Patrol, teaching flying. After her father's death in 1948, she shifted focus to managing the family’s slaughterhouse but stayed active in aviation organizations.
