Making Baskets

Traditional basket making in West Virginia uses local materials like white oak, hickory, maple, and vines. White oak is the most common and is split into thin strips called "splits." Baskets come in various shapes and sizes and are named based on their shape or purpose, like "egg" or "potato" baskets.

There are three main types: rib baskets (with a frame and woven ribs), split baskets (made entirely from flat splits), and wicker baskets (made from flexible materials like willow or shaped oak rods). Though fewer people make traditional baskets today, the craft still survives in the region.
