Born in New Jersey, she began as an actress and women's rights advocate before becoming a political leader. After her husband's death, she managed their Kingwood farm.

In 1920, she made history by becoming the first woman to second a presidential nominee at a major party convention. Though she narrowly lost Senate races, her political battles were significant, especially in her efforts to become the first woman senator from West Virginia. She also supported farm organizations and wool production, later taking on national roles during the New Deal after moving to New York in 1925.
