In 1751, pioneer John Lewis and his sons, Thomas and Andrew, camped in what is now Lewisburg while exploring the area. The town grew because of the Lewis Springs and the militia that gathered there. Other factors in its growth included building forts west of the Greenbrier River and Lewisburg becoming the county seat of Greenbrier County.
