Moorefield, the county seat of Hardy County, was chartered in October 1777 and is the fourth-oldest town in West Virginia. It's located where the South Fork of the South Branch meets the main South Branch of the Potomac River. The town was laid out on 62 acres of land owned by Conrad Moore, after whom the town was named. Moore's home, the Old Stone Tavern, still stands on Main Street. Early settlers included families such as Van Meter, Harness, McNeill, Renick, Hite, Cunningham, Williams, Inskeep, Fisher, and Hutton.
